Abstract

PURPOSE:To chop an optical fiber with necessary irreducible tension providing a cam mechanism which puts a clamping means in reciprocal motion in the direction of an optical axis so that tension larger than required is not applied to the core of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A 1st supporting means 8 and a 2nd supporting means 9 are arranged across a bending means 11 and the optical fiber 2 can be curved and elongated efficiently to small curvature. The bending means 11 and a gripping means 7 are so constituted that they are put in motion by the cam mechanism. When a pulse motor 10 turns, the bending means 11 is elevated in a direction A nearly perpendicular to the optical axis through the operation of an end surface cam 4. At the same time, the 2nd gripping means 7 moves in the direction (B) of the optical axis through the operation of the plate cam 5. Namely, the optical fiber 2 is moved in a direction A and the direction B at the same time, so no unreasonable tension operates on the optical fiber. Consequently, the optical fiber can be chopped with the necessary irreducible tension.
