Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight aggregate of good quality having glassy films and high surface film strength, by mixing coal ash with waste glass granules, granulating the resultant mixture, calcining the obtained grains at a specific temperature and cooling the calcined grains. CONSTITUTION:Coal ash granules are mixed with glass granules and the resultant mixture is granulated and calcined at 900-1,200 deg.C. The surfaces of the resultant grains 1 are converted into a semimolten state. The interiors thereof are softened to simultaneously evolve a gas, form closed cells 2 and expand the softened whole, which is then air-cooled to form hard glassy films 3 on the surfaces and afford the aimed lightweight aggregate having about 1.0 apparent specific gravity.
