Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect an air excess rate linearly from a rich region to a lean region by providing different gas diffusion resistance layers to a reaction electrode and selectively using these layers. CONSTITUTION:Of a pair of the electrodes 2, 3 which are disposed on both faces of a solid electrolyte element and have air permeability and catalytic activity, the electrode 2 on the side to be exposed to a gaseous atmosphere to be measured is divided to at least two plural electrodes 2a, 2b. The gas diffusion resistance layers of different gas diffusion resistances such as a 1st gas diffusion resistance layer 4a for rate determination of oxygen in the gas to be measured and the 2nd gas diffusion resistance layer 4b for rate determination of the gases except the oxygen in the gas to be measured are provided on these plural electrodes 2a, 2b. A voltage impressing means 8 is adapted to apply voltage on the electrode 2a on the 1st gas diffusion resistance layer 4a side and the electrode 3 to be exposed to a standard gas side when the concn. of the oxygen in the gas to be measured is above the prescribed value and to the electrode 2b on the 2nd gas diffusion resistance layer 4b side and the electrode 3 to be exposed to the standard gas side when the concn. is below the prescribed value.
