Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the present position of a vehicle with high accuracy by receiving the ultrasonic wave signals radiated from vehicle detectors installed to prescribed positions on roads on a vehicle side and calculating the distance between the signal reception points in accordance with the mileage of the vehicle. CONSTITUTION:The prescribed ultrasonic wave signals are kept radiated from ultrasonic heads of the vehicle sensors installed to the prescribed positions of road traffic network. The ultrasonic wave signals are received by a signal receiver 7 mounted on the vehicle 1 and the distance between the ultrasonic wave signal reception points is calculated in accordance with the mileage of the vehicle. The installation positions of the vehicle sensors coinciding with the distance between the vehicle sensors previously stored in accordance with road maps is then selected. The present position of the vehicle 1 is detected in accordance with the selected position of the vehicle sensors.
