Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain graphitic carbon fiber of little fluffing with no carbonization treatment required, by spinning coal-based pitch followed by infusibilization treatment and temperature rise at specified rate followed by calcination in a non-oxide-active gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Pitch fiber formed by melt spinning of coal-based pitch is heated to temperatures below the softening point of this pitch fiber under an oxidative atmosphere to carry out infusibilization treatment. The resultant pitch fiber is continuously carried and heated at a rate of >=1700 deg.C/min. followed by passing through a heating zone of non-oxidative gas atmosphere such as of argon or helium with a graphitization temperature region of 2000-3000 deg.C to carry out calcination for 0.1-2min., thus obtaining the objective graphitic carbon fiber.
