Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title pitch which can be softened and melted by heating and is suited for use as a raw material for a graphite fiber, by hydrogenating a beta-resin extracted from a coal tar pitch by solvent fractionation and treating the hydrogenation product so as to have a high-boiling point. CONSTITUTION:A coal tar pitch comprising a fraction obtd. by the distillation of a raw tar produced in coal dry distillation is fractionated with a solvent, thereby extracting a beta-resin which is insoluble in toluene, benzene, etc. but soluble in quinoline, pyridine, etc. Then, the resin is hydrogenated and subsequently treated in an inert atmosphere at 360-430 deg.C for 30-300min, so as to have a high-boiling point, thereby obtaining a mesophase pitch having a mesophase content of 80% or higher. Moreover, according to necessity, the pitch is pulverized, and solvent soluble components are removed using benzene or toluene. Thus, there is obtd. a mesophase pitch of 100% in mesophase content which is soluble in 100% quinoline.
