Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a low-MW phenylene thioether oligomer free from a high-MW component, by reacting a dihalobenzene with an alkali metal sulfide in an aprotic polar solvent under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:The purpose oligomer is obtained by reacting a dihalobenzene (I) with an alkali metal sulfide (II) in an aprotic polar solvent in the presence or absence of a radical scavenger and/or a shortstop under conditions including a (I) to (II) molar ratio of 1.5-5, a reaction temperature of 150-250 deg.C and a reaction time of 1-10hr. M-Dinitrobenzene is desirable as said radical scavenger because it difficultly reacts with the product. To obtain a functional group- terminated phenylene thioether oligomer, it is suitable to react the (halogen- terminated) oligomer obtained by the above process with 1.2-3 equivalent of an aromatic mercaptide of the formula, per equivalent of the halogen atom, in an aprotic polar solvent.
