Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-quality polymer of excellent water resistance by using a highly active catalyst, by polymerizing a phenolic compound through oxidation in the presence of a specified copper catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic compound (A) (e.g., 2,6-dimethylphenol) is polymerized through oxidation at 0-80 deg.C in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst (B) comprising 0.005-0.5g.atom, per 100mol of component A, of a cupurous or cupuric compound (a) (e.g., Cu2O), a mixture (b) comprising 0.05-15mol, per 100mol of component A, of sec. aliphatic amine (i) (e.g., di-n-butylamine) and, optionally, 0.05-15mol, per 100mol of component A [corresponding to a component (i) to component (ii) molar ratio of 90-10/10-90] of at least one member (ii) selected from M-phenylethanolamine and an N-hydrocarbon-substituted aniline, 0.1-10 mol, per 100mol of component A, of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,3- diaminopropane (c) and 0.5-20mol, per mol of the copper of component (a), of a Br or Cl compound (d) (e.g., HBr).
