Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for recognition processing of a recording format of a medium, by moving a magnetic head to a reference track when a medium whose recording format is unknown is installed, reading the information recorded in the medium successively from a zero track, and setting it to the same recording format as the time when its medium is recorded. CONSTITUTION:The titled device moves a magnetic head by receiving a level signal (a) being an output of a level detector, a medium detecting signal (b) for showing that a medium is installed, and a zero track signal (c) for showing a reference position of a magnetic head, and generating a direction signal (d) and a step signal (e) when the medium is installed. Subsequently, a recording format of the medium is detected by an every track deciding means for deciding whether the level signal exists or not successively from a zero track of the medium, an every 1 track deciding means for deciding a face that the level signal is generated at every 1 track, and an after-77 track deciding means for deciding a fact that the level signal (a) is generated after 77 tracks. Also, a recording format detecting part 6 for generating a recording surface density signal (f) and a rotation signal (g) is provided so that reproduction can be executed by the same format as the time when the medium is recorded.
