Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for agricul ture and medicine in simple treatment and high yield, by subjecting 0- nitrophenylacetaldehydes to catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of a hydro genation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:0-Nitrophenylacetaldehydes expressed by formula I (X and Y are H or halogen) using a hydrogenation catalyst such as Raney nickel or Pd/C in a solvent such as methanol at 0-150 deg.C and <=10kg/cm<2> G hydrogen pressure, preferably at 15-100 deg.C and 1-6kg/cm<2> G hydrogen pressure for 0.01-10hr to provide the compound expressed by formula II. The hydrogenation catalyst is used at a weight ratio of 0.01-30%, preferably 0.03-10% based on the compound expressed by formula I. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting 0-nitrotoluenes with paraformaldehyde and oxidizing the reaction product.
