Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain indole of high purity economically in high recovery rate by precipitating crude indole crystals crystals from cooled crude indole, washing the crude crystals with a aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent and drying.
CONSTITUTION: Crude indole oil separated from coal tar or the like is cooled to precipitate indole crystals. The crude crystals are washed or rinsed with an aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or cyclic hydrocarbon solvent boiling at 30W200°C and dried to give indole of high purity, useful as a starting substance for medicines and agrochemicals. The process can recover indole of high purity in low running costs in high recovery regardless of the concentration of the starting indole.
