Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate in high efficiency, by reacting a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid with an olefin in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst containing Pd, a metal and halogen component and a nitrogen-containing oxide via several steps.
CONSTITUTION: Glycol esters are produced by reacting a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid an olefin in the presence of O and a catalyst containing a palladium component (e.g., sodium palladium chloride), a metal component of group IA, IB, IIA, IIB, VA, VIIB or VIII of the periodic table, a halogen component (e.g. Cl) and a nitrogen-containing oxide (e.g., nitric acid). The above process includes the following 4 steps. (1) Introduction of hydrogen after the reaction to reduce the Pd catalyst. (2) Filtration of the reduced liquid into reduced palladium and reaction liquid. (3) Distillation of the reaction liquid to separate the lower aliphatic carboxylic acid from the objective compound. (4) Addition of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, the distillation residue of the step 3, a halogen and a nitrate ion source to the reduced Pd of the step 2 and the introduction of the prepared catalyst liquid into the reaction system.
