Abstract

PURPOSE:To satisfactorily shorten the time for transition to a 2nd density state without deteriorating an EC electrochromic layer by impressing the overvoltage larger than the voltage corresponding to the 2nd density state between electrodes and changing either or both of the voltage value and impression time of the overvoltage according to the transition width of the density state. CONSTITUTION:The overvoltage V3 higher than V2 is impressed on the EC layer (ECD) during the time from T0 to T1 and V2 is impressed thereon during the time from T1 to T2 when the voltage of the EC layer attains V2 and thereafter, the impression of the voltage is stopped at the time of transferring the 1st density state in which the initial voltage V1 is impressed on the EC layer to the 2nd density state in which the voltage V2 higher than V1 is impressed thereon. On the other hand, the overvoltage V5 lower than V4 is impressed on the ECD during the time from T0 to T1 and V4 is impressed thereon during the time from T1 to T2 when the voltage of the EC layer attains V4 and thereafter, the impression of the voltage is stopped at the time of transferring the density state to the 2nd density state in which the voltage V4 lower than the initial voltage V1 is impressed on the EC layer. The time for transition to the 2nd density is thereby most adequately shortened without deteriorating the EC layer.
