Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance not only heat efficiency but also abrasion resistance, in a thermal head consisting of a membrane heat generating resistor and the protective layer formed on said resistor, by forming the protective layer from a membrane having specific density. CONSTITUTION:In a thermal head wherein a membrane heat generating resistor 2 is formed on a substrate 1 and a protective layer 4 is formed on said resistor 2, the protective layer 4 is formed of a membrane and the density thereof is set to 75-95% of the theoretical density of the material quality of the protective layer 4. The membrane material of the protective layer 4 is pref. selected from Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, Ta2O5, Si3N4, AlN and Ti3N4. When the density of the protective layer 4 is low as mentioned above, a void is generated in the protective layer 4 and the heat conductivity of this part is extremely inferior in the same degree as air and the heat conductivity of the protective layer 4 becomes low as compared with a conventional dense protective layer. As a result, the diffusion of heat energy in a lateral direction is reduced and the printing efficiency of recording paper is enhanced.
