Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce glass of high quality free from breakage, warpage, and cracks by drying and sintering a wet gel formed by the sol-gel method, from a sol solution containing metal alkoxides as major starting materials to eliminate water and alcohol uniformly. CONSTITUTION:For example, a mixed solution of water, hydrochloric acid and alcohol is poured into a commercially available ethyl silicate, stirred for 1-2hr in a dispersing device to effect complete hydrolysis. The resultant sol solution mainly containing metal alkoxides is gradually dried in a drier at 60-80 deg.C for about 10 days under control of heating temperature, air humidity and air flow rate to form a moist gel of high quality 1. The gel is transferred into an air-permeable vessel 2 of an equivalent size, e.g., made of porous glass or honeycomb ceramics, when needed, the vessel is covered with a lid 3 to close tightly and subjected to drying and sintering as the temperature is gradually raised up to 1,100 deg.C.
