Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber having each specific inner diameter, membrane thickness etc., outstanding in gas permeability and separability, heat resistance and chemical stability, by making hollow fiber consisting of acrylonitrile-based polymer flame resistant, followed by carbonization and conversion into porous structure, under specified conditions, respectively. CONSTITUTION:Hollow fiber produced by spinning an acrylonitrile-based polymer containing >=90mol.% of acrylonitrile is drawn by a factor of >=3, treated in an oxidative gas (e.g., O2, O3) at 200-300 deg.C to afford flame resistance, and either subjected to carbonization treatment in an inert gas (e.g. N2, Ar) at 300-1,000 deg.C followed by treatment in an oxidative gas (e.g. water vapor, air)- contg. atmosphere at 600-1,200 deg.C to give porous structure, or subjected to carbonization and porous structure formation treatment simultaneously in an oxidative gas-contg. atmosphere at 400-800 deg.C thus obtaining the objective fiber having penetrated fine pores of a radius <=50Angstrom with the inner diameter of 10-500mum and 0.1< membrane thickness/inner diameter ratio <0.25.
