Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of data by deciding the state of a defect as the defect which exists in the same position as the position of a position error signal on all data tracks belonging to a cylinder having the defect of the position error signal. CONSTITUTION:The defect is assumed to be in the same position as the position of the defect of the position error signal on all data tracks belonging to the cylinder with the defect of the position error signal, so that the state of that defect is decided to perform the deciding action in two kinds as to whether data are writable or readable by an off-track operation or defective in a degree of worse condition to be performed by a defect skipping operation. In other words, the information of the defect to be written in the data tracks is registered by assuming the defect to be in the same position as the position of the defect of the position error signal on all data tracks belonging to the cylinder having the defect of the position error signal, thus preventing the reliability of the data from lowering due to the defect of the position error signal by performing the off-set operation or the defect skipping operation at the time of writing or reading the data.
