Abstract

PURPOSE:To immobilize an enzyme or a bacterium cell in high productivity, by adding chitosan-aldehyde gel to the enzyme or bacterium cell, then crosslinking the gel with glutaraldehyde making into a resin in a gelatinous state and aggregating. CONSTITUTION:1pt.wt. chitosan is reacted with 1-50pts.wt. of an aldehyde to form Schiff base from amino group of part of chitosan and the aldehyde. Consequently, chitosan-aldehyde gel having a structure shown by the formula [R is H or -(CH2)nCH3; n is 0-2] and a water content corresponding to 10-1,000 times the empty weight of chitosan is produced. Then the chitosan- aldehyde gel is added to an enzyme or bacterium cell, the enzyme or bacterium cell is taken in the surface or the interior of the chitosan-aldehyde gel, which is crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, made into a resin in a gelatinous state and aggregated to immobilize the enzyme or bacterium cell.
