Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and good wear resistance and durability by specifying the average major axis length and crystallite size of the ferromagnetic alloy powder in plural magnetic layers of the magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The plural magnetic layers formed by dispersing the ferromagnetic powder in a binder are provided on a nonmagnetic base. The ferromagnetic alloy powder of the uppermost layer thereof is formed to have <0.25mum average major axis length by a transmission type electron microscope and <200Angstrom crystallite size by an X-ray diffraction method. The average major axis length of the ferromagnetic powder except in the uppermost layer is specified to >=0.25mum and the crystallite size to >=250Angstrom . The recording medium having the excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and the good wear resistance and durability is obtd. by using the ferromagnetic powders having such lengths and sizes.
