Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain the titled large-sized uniform quartz glass suitable as optical lens, etc., by hydrolyzing an alkyl silicate by using an acidic catalyst, adding silica fine particles and a chromium-containing compound to the hydrolyzed solution, adjusting to a proper pH to gelatinize the silica dispersion, drying and heating the material into glass. CONSTITUTION:An alkyl silicate (e.g. ethyl silicate) is hydrolyzed by using an acidic catalyst (e.g. hydrochloric acid). Then silica fine particles are dispersed into the hydrolyzed solution, which is blended with one or more chromium element-containing compounds (e.g. chromium nitrate). Then the silica dispersion is adjusted to pH3-6, the sol is gelatinized and the gel is dried to give a dry gel. Then the dry gel is heated into glass to give chromium doped quartz glass having <=1X10<-5> uniformity per unit volume.
