Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain high purity Al on the cathode at a low temp. and a low cost by putting impure Al or pure Al as the anode in a specified molten salt electrolytic bath and carrying out electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:Impure Al or pure Al as the anode and e.g. a Cu plate as the cathode are put in a molten salt electrolytic bath consisting of 40-80mol.% aluminum halide and 60-20mol.% 1-4C alkylpyridinium halide or further contg. 10-75vol.% one or more kinds of arom. org. solvents such as xylene and toluene and a diaphragm is stretched between both the electrodes as required. DC or pulsating current is supplied to the resulting electrolytic refining bath for Al kept at 0-150 deg.C at 0.1-30A/dm<2> current density in a dry oxygen- free atmosphere optionally under ultrasonic waves and/or a jet to obtain high purity Al of >=99.9% purity on the cathode by electrolysis.
