Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent damage to a document when it is taken out by providing a means interlocked with a cover to move a separating means or a carrying means against an energizing means, and constructing a sheet feeder so that the separating means and the carrying means are separated from each other when the cover is opened. CONSTITUTION:When a document is jammed and an operator releases a cover, a separating pressure releasing pin 79 integral with the cover is moved from a regulating position A where a separation releasing spring 77 is pushed down to a releasing position B, and a spring 77 engages with a projection 69a on a separation arm 69 so as to rotary energizes the separation arm 69 against a separation left spring 73. A separation belt 71 and a separation idler 74 are separated farther than the thickness of a document M from a carrying belt 55 and a carrying idler 56. Consequently, the jammed document M can be taken out easily. Upon closure of the cover, the pin 79 contacts the spring 77 to push down the spring 77 so as to rotate the separation arm 69 thus energizing the separation belt 71 and the separation idler 74 toward the carrying belt 55 and the carrying idler 56, resulting in separation carrying state.
