Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the display having a good contrast even if the incident luminous flux on a display element is weak by disposing a light source to the ends of two substrates and guiding light to a diffraction grating while the luminous flux from the light source is totally reflected between the substrates. CONSTITUTION:Part of the incident light on the display element 10 is diffracted in a diffraction grating part which is a display pattern in a display state. Of the diffracted light, the component having a large diffraction angle is jumped to the outside of the eyes' visual field and, therefore, the object light is visually recognized as if part of said light is attenuated. The display superposed on the object image is thus made. The display contrast of the display pattern decreases if the intensity of the object light is weak. The luminous flux from the light source 8 disposed at the end of the display element 10 is, therefore, projected to the display element 10 from the end thereof through a polarizing plate 9 and while the light is totally reflected between the substrates of the display element 10, the light is guided to the display pattern part. The decrease in the display contrast of the display pattern is thereby prevented.
