Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily and stably form a convex spherical face corresponding to the material of a ferrule, external environment and desired convex spherical shape by using >=2 kinds of elastic bodies having different characteristics in combination as the elastic bodies of an elastic polishing disk. CONSTITUTION:The elastic polishing disk 2 is constituted by laminating the upper layer elastic body 23 and lower layer elastic body 24 which are different in hardness between an ordinary polishing disk 21 for rectangular polishing and abrasive paper 22. The elastic bodies 23, 24 generate an elastic deformation when a specified load is applied to the optical connector ferrule 1. A front end part 11 is polished to the convex spherical shape by utilizing the stresses that this elastic deformation exerts on the ferrule 1. Only the material of the elastic bodies of the elastic polishing disk 2 largely affects the end shape of the ferrule in this case. The elastic bodies consisting of the materials having the different characteristics (mainly Young's moduli) are, thereupon, used in combination, and the apparent Young's modulus over the entire part of the elastic bodies is changed by changing the thickness of a part of the elastic bodies, by which the elastic bodies are optimized.
