Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce squaric acid from an inexpensive raw material under mild condition with simple process, by culturing a specific microbial strain belonging to Fusarium genus in a medium preferably containing pyruvic acid. CONSTITUTION:Fusarium moniliforme 1248 (FERM P-1362) is cultured in a medium containing a carbon source, nitrogen source, inorganic substance, vitamins, etc. and 10g/l of sodium pyruvate at 10-50 deg.C, preferably 25-35 deg.C and pH 3-10, preferably pH 5-8 for 3-30 days by standing culture, shaking culture or culture under aeration and agitation. The objective squaric acid is recovered from the obtained cultured liquid e.g. by ion exchange polymer treatment, precipitation or solvent extraction.
