Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect a temp. change of a cable on the spot and to prevent a fire by housing a temp. detecting optical fiber having a protective coating of a metal into the sheath of the cable or proximity thereto. CONSTITUTION:The temp. detecting coated optical fiber 1 housed in the sheath of the cable or in proximity thereto consists of the temp. detecting optical fiber 2 and the metal coating layer 3. An optical fiber formed by doping a rare earth element to quartz glass is used as the optical fiber of which the light loss changes with a temp. change. The light loss increases with an increase in the temp., and, therefore, light pulses are entered to the fiber and the fluctua tion in the longitudinal loss can be measured by a light pulse tester, etc. Alumi num, copper and silver which are good conductors of heat are used as the metal coating of the fiber 1. The detection sensitivity is, therefore, high even with the abrupt temp. change and the temp. distribution spreads in the longitudi nal direction, by which the sensitivity is enhanced. Since the fiber is housed in the sheath of the cable or proximity thereto, the temp. change of the cable itself is early detected.
