Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily produce a fiber reinforced metallic material having excellent mechanical properties by packing a molten metal among many reinforcing fibers paralleled with each other and slowly cooling the material while applying a temp. gradient in the direction perpendicular to the orientation of the reinforcing fibers and pressurizing the material. CONSTITUTION:The reinforcing fibers are paralleled in the prescribed direction and are packed into a mold. The molten metal is then packed among the reinforcing fibers and is solidified under a high pressure to obtain a stock. This stock is put into the mold and while the stock is remelted and pressurized, the one side thereof is cooled and the other side is heated to apply the temp. gradient in the direction perpendicular to the orientation of the reinforcing fibers, by which the stock is slowly cooled and solidified. The fiber reinforced metallic material 2 provided with the crystals 5 grown in the direction perpendicular to the direction of the reinforcing fibers in the metal 3 solidified in the reinforcing fibers 4 subjected to the above-mentioned paralleling is thus obtd. The above-mentioned material 2 is thereby easily improved in the strength in both the longitudinal and transverse directions.
