Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency and the life of a battery by forming a negative electrode of an organic electrolyte secondary battery with a composite prepared by previously absorbing lithium in a molding of carbon fibers having a specific crystallite size. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fibers having a crystallite size (Lc(002)) in X-ray diffraction of 10-170Angstrom are used. Carbon fibers having a fiber diameter of 0.01-100mum are mixed with a specified amount of binder such as polytetrafluoroethylene, and then formed in a molding having a specified shape. The carbon fiber molding and a metallic lithium are immersed in an organic electrolyte prepared by dissolving, for example, lithium phosphofluoride, propylene carbonate and 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and connected to each electrode of a DC power source to absorb lithium in the carbon fiber molding. A battery using this lithium absorbed carbon fiber molding as a negative electrode has high efficiency and long life.
