Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce material cost and processing cost to a large extent and to also reduce the cost price, by mounting a moving type platen on the platen carrier moving in parallel to a printing part carrier and forming the same into a planar shape shorter than the length of the printing part carrier in the lateral direction thereof and longer than the width of one printed character. CONSTITUTION:A serial printer is constituted so as to contain a printing part carrier 3 and a platen carrier 2 having a moving type platen 1 mounted thereon. The moving type platen 1 is formed so as to be shorter than the length of the printing part carrier 3 in the lateral direction thereof and moves in the same direction as the printing part carrier 3 across printing paper. A printing head and an ink ribbon are mounted on the printing part carrier 3 and the moving type platen 1 present behind printing paper 8 is used as a support material to print the printing paper. The moving type platen 1 is mounted on the platen carrier 2 and moves in synchronous relation to the printing part carrier 3. The moving type platen becomes sufficiently usable if the length thereof in the lateral direction has about one printed character width and, when said platen 1 moves in synchronous relation to the printing part carrier 3, said length is desirably shorter than the printing part carrier 3 at most.
