Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound which is useful as an intermediate of medicines selectively in no need of purification by allowing a mixture of 1, 1-di(substituted aryl)ethylene aud mono(substituted aryl)ethylene to react with carbon monoxide and water under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of a 1, 1-di(substituted aryl)ethylene of formula I and a mono(substituted aryl)ethylene of formula II (Ar is substituted aryl; substituted aryl A3 may be a monovalent group which is derived from the substituted aryl groups Ar1 and Ar2 in the compound of formula I by removing a hydrogen atom is used as a feedstock to effect the reaction thereof with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a transition metal hydroformylation catalyst at 40-200 deg.C, preferably 50-180 deg.C under pressure from 5kg/cm<2> to 500kg/cm<2> to give an aryl-substituted propionaldehyde.
