Abstract

PURPOSE:To contrive to attain low cost for the titled device by forming each picture element by plural photoelectric conversion elements and providing a signal selection circuit fetching one output signal from plural storage charges corresponding to them. CONSTITUTION:Two adjacent photodiodes 9 form each picture element and 12 picture photodetectors (6 picture elements) are arranged linearly in parallel with the transfer gate 2 adjacently at the opposite side to the charge coupling element (CCD) 3 by clipping the transfer gate 2, and in this case, they are formed in a rectangular shape. Moreover, a switch 10 is provided between a timing generator 6 and a sample-and-hold (SH) circuit 7 and the three devices 6, 7, 10 constitute the signal selection circuit. Then the switch 10 selects any of SH control signals SHA, SHB outputted from the timing generator 6 synchronously with the picture element signal transferred from the solid-state image pickup element 5 by the switch and one is transferred to the SH circuit 7. Thus, the yield of the solid-state image pickup element is improved and an inexpensive solid-state image pickup device is obtained.
