The present invention relates to novel antiperspirant compositions, and more particularly to antiperspirant compositions containing as active ingredients a combination of aluminum chloride and aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride. The use of aluminum chloride or aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride individually as antiperspirant materials is known in the art. However, we have now discovered that when these substances are used together they act synergistically to give unexpectedly high activity and response rates. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a high performance antiperspirant composition containing a combination of aluminum chloride and aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride as the active antiperspirant substance. It is also an object of the present invention to apply to the skin of a subject an antiperspirant-effective amount of a composition comprising a combination of aluminum chloride and aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride as an active antiperspirant substance. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for suppressing sweating. Other and more detailed objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims. Unless otherwise specified, the percentages in the following description are by weight based on the total weight of the composition. It is known that certain people are sensitive to certain types of antiperspirant salts. 60 of antiperspirants panel
It is unusual to find that ~70% or more are sensitive to one substance. However, more than 93% of panel participants responded favorably when using the active ingredient combination of the invention. In addition, surprisingly high activity was recorded, with 88% having excellent activity. It has always been believed that the active mechanisms of different salts are different. What we have discovered is a combination that allows active response from more than one mechanism. Normally one would expect this combination to be very irritating since the solution is very acidic. We also found that increasing PH alone was not sufficient to alleviate this stimulus sensitivity. However, we have also discovered that using a divalent oxide or hydroxide in combination with a small amount of glycine solves this problem. Although alkaline earth metal salts alone or glycine alone may somewhat ameliorate this irritating problem, the use of this divalent metal oxide or hydroxide in combination with glycine is in line with the discoveries of the present invention. It completely disappears. The amount of aluminum chloride that can be included in the compositions of the invention can vary somewhat. Often it will range from about 5% to about 25% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
% by weight preferably from about 7.5 to about 15% by weight.
As used herein, the term "aluminum chloride" refers to anhydrous aluminum chloride and its hydrates and hydroxides, such as AlCl 3 6H 2 O or Al 2
(OH) 5 Cl. The aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride used in the present invention is well known in the prior art and is described by the following general formula. Al 4 Zr o O(OH) 14-o Cl o・xH 2 O (In the above formula, n has a value of 0 to 14, and x has a value of 0 to 20) The following compounds are given as examples. It will be done. Al4ZrO (OH) 11Cl3 ; AlZrO ( OH) 10Cl4 ; and their corresponding hydrates. The amount of aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride that may be included in the compositions of the present invention may also vary somewhat. Usually, however, it will constitute from about 2% to about 20%, preferably from about 5% to about 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition. An important feature of the compositions of the invention is the ratio of aluminum salts to Al/Zr salts that they contain. This ratio ranges from about 0.5 to about 2, with a preferred range of about 1.25 to about 1.75. Another important relationship in the compositions of the present invention is the molar ratio of metal to chlorine. It is important that this molar ratio is less than 0.9 in order to preserve the ionic nature of this complex with regard to antiperspirant properties. As mentioned above, it is highly advantageous to use a combination of magnesium hydroxide (or oxide) and glycine to adjust the PH of the compositions of the invention. This combination is commonly used to adjust the PH to a range of about 2.5 to about 4.5. Glycine is used at a level of about 0.25% to about 5% by weight, and magnesium hydroxide (or oxide) comprises about 1% to about 9%, based on the total weight of the composition. The ratio of glycine to magnesium hydroxide (or oxide) is also an important factor. Although this ratio can range from about 0.025 to about 5, it is preferred to use a ratio ranging from about 0.1 to about 1.0. A novel combination of antiperspirant substances and the above-mentioned PH
Conditioning agents may be incorporated into any of a variety of dosage forms useful for delivering antiperspirant substances. They can be found in lotions, in creams or gels,
It can be incorporated into foam systems, aerosol formulations, as part of antiperspirant sticks, or delivered in the form of a solution in a suitable solvent vehicle. The formulations below are illustrative of the types of formulations using the compositions of this invention as active antiperspirant materials. A Roll-on (lotion and cream) Active agent substance 25% Softener 2-4% Surfactant 2-4% Buffer system 2-7% Add water to 100% B Suspension - Anhydrous aerosol and can be used in the formulation of aerosol foams. Products made by spray drying (OH) 2 and glycine To demonstrate that the combination of aluminum chloride and aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride acts synergistically as an antiperspirant, compositions A,
Three compositions, designated B and C, were made. They were identical in all respects except for the active antiperspirant material. Composition A is 25% aluminum by weight.
Composition B contained 10% by weight aluminum-zirconium hydroxychloride and 15% by weight aluminum chloride; and Composition C contained 25% by weight aluminum chloride. . Each of these compositions was tested for antiperspirant activity on a group of individuals serving as an antiperspirant panel. The method used is Federal Register Vol.43,
No.196 (October 10, 1978)
It was called the Gravemetric Axillary Antiperspirant Test. The results of this test are summarized in Table 1 below. It describes the formulation of compositions A, B and C and the antiperspirant activity measured for each composition.
