Abstract

PURPOSE:To recover the activity of a cathode having low hydrogen over-voltage without carrying out recoating when the cathode used to electrolyze an aq. soln. of alkali metallic halide is deteriorated, by polishing the surface of the cathode to remove the deteriorated part. CONSTITUTION:When a cathode having low hydrogen overvoltage used to electrolyze an aq. soln. of alkali metallic halide or alkali metallic hydroxide in a cell is deteriorated, the surface of the cathode is polished with sandpaper or the like. The polishing depth is preferably regulated to <= about 100mum and only the deteriorated part is removed by the polishing. Thus, the activity of the deteriorated cathode can simply be recovered without suspending the operation of the cell for a long time.
