Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in the image quality by recording color gradation with the employment of one kind of ink for yellow and at least two kinds of inks having different densities for the colors other than yellow, and an image of yellow being larger in size than that of the other colors. CONSTITUTION:To decide the dot pattern for yellow, patches are outputted for all patterns 0-25 in a matrix of 5X5 dots to measure the optical reflecting density (0.D value) thereof which is brought in linear relation with an image data. On the other hand, to decide the dot pattern for magenta, cyan and black, patches are outputted for the pattern of dim dots only, then for the pattern of the combination of dim and medium dots and further for the pattern of the combination of medium and deep dots. The brightness of the outputted patches is measured, and the patches that can be expressed by the dim dot pattern and by the combination pattern of the dim and medium dots are selected in the low-density region, while the patches that can be represented by the combination pattern of the medium and deep dots are selected in the high- density region. The dot pattern decided in the above-described manner is written in each of the dot pattern memories, thus enabling recording of color gradation.
