Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent an oil-water separating membrane from being dried, thereby to ensure that no fuel leakage will occur even with a fuel having a low water content, by providing, in a draining pipe below the oil-water separating membrane, a water-retaining membrane which is a porous membrane of hydrophobic polymer, thereby to form a water storage chamber on the water-retaining membrane. CONSTITUTION:The bottom wall of a fuel residence chamber A which is the space below a filter element 5 in a fuel filter F placed in the fuel piping of a fuel-supplying device is formed of an oil-water separating membrane 5 which is a porous membrane of hydrophilic polymer, such as acetyl cellulose etc., and has been sufficiently impregnated with water beforehand. In a draining pipe 4 below the separating membrane 5, a water-retaining membrane 6 is provided to form a water storage chamber B, the water-retaining membrane being a porous membrane of hydrophobic polymer such as polytetrafluoroethylene etc. The water in a fuel settles on the surface of the separating membrane 5 due to the difference in specific gravity. The separating membrane 5 prevents the fuel from passing through and allows only the water to pass. The water thus passed through the membrane 5 enters the water storage chamber B to form a water layer 7. The water-retaining 6 generally does not allow the water to pass through. However, if the level of the water layer 7 exceeds a certain level, the water is forced to pass through the through-pores of the membrane 6 due to the pressure of the water itself, and then discharged.
