790,789. Filters: gravity-separation apparatus: purifying liquids. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS, Inc. June 1, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 15754/55. Class 46. A mixture of liquids, e.g. oil or petrol, and water, partially or wholly emulsified and containing solid contaminants, is introduced at 24 into a housing 12 and passes inwards through pleated, resin-impregnated cellulose filters 31, solid contaminants being removed thereby. The liquids pass upwards to the interiors of coalescing units 36 comprising an inner sheet of pleated resin-impregnated cellulosic material, an intermediate sheet composed of a homogeneous mixture of dissimilar fibres and an outer sheet like the inner one. It is the intermediate sheet which performs the coalescing function, and it may comprise two or more of the following : asbestos, cellulose, (cotton, wood or viscose), glass, nylon, polyester, polyethylene and vinyl fibres. The sheet may be formed by Fourdrinier methods, felting, or bonding under heat and pressure. An aldehyde resin may be used for impregnating or bonding. Coalesced water sinks onto a dividing plate 19 while the oil or petrol passes through filters 51 differing from filters 31 only in having a coating of a silicone resin to repel any remaining water, into the uppermost zone 20, whence it is discharged through pipe 27 and valve 64. When a small amount of water has collected on the plate 19 in the zone 21 some of it will pass through pipe 70 to a diaphragm chamber 65 whereby a valve 63 is opened, and the water passes under a baffle 61 and down a tube 59 to be discharged through it. If the amount of water becomes excessive the diaphragm is further operated to close valve 64 until more water has been removed. In an alternative apparatus the filters 31 are omitted and the supporting plate 40 has a depending skirt extending to the bottom of the elements 36 ; plate 55 is omitted.
