Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a microporous polyolefin film having an apparent porosity of the surface layer of the film smaller than the average porosity of the whole layer, having excellent retainability of electrolyte and high stability of electrical characteristics with time and suitable as an electrolyte separator. CONSTITUTION:A polyolefin polymer (preferably polyethylene or polypropylene) is compounded with an organic solid (e.g. phthalic acid ester). The mixture is extruded under melting, the organic solid is extracted with a solvent and the product is drawn with a roll. In the above roll-drawing process, the film is e.g. nipped on at least one of a low-speed roll or a high-speed roll to decrease the porosity of the surface layer. A microporous film having an apparent porosity of the surface layer of 10-45%, an average porosity of the film as a whole of 50-85%, a liquid paraffin permeation time of <=5sec and an average apparent pore diameter of the surface layer of preferably 0.01-4mum is produced by the above process. An electrolyte separator can be produced from the obtained microporous film.
