PURPOSE:To make it possible to keep the amount of moire of a picture tube within an acceptable limit without the degradation of the resolution by making the intensity distribution of the electron beam approximate to the Gaussian distribution so as that the degree of approximation falls in a specified range. CONSTITUTION:The shape of the intensity distribution curve 1 of an electron beam is made approximate to that of the Gaussian distribution curve 1G. When the width of the both curves at the intensity of 50% is made to be equal and the ratios of the width of the curve 1 to that of the curve 1G at the intensities of 80% and 5% are denoted by mu and ml respectively, the approximation degree of the curve 1 to the curve 1G is expressed in terms of mu and ml. If the curve 1 is identical to the Gaussian distribution 1G no moire can be seen. When the relations 0.95<=mu<=1.05 and 0.90<=ml<=1.10 are satisfied the amount of moire can be kept within an acceptable limit.
