Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the brightness and to make the luminous color clear by arranging focus lenses at the places responding to discharge cells between a discharge cell unit and a front side substrate. CONSTITUTION:Between a discharge cell unit 9 and a front side substrate 2, a focus lens plate 11 which forms focus lenses 10 is furnished. When a voltage is applied between a selected cathode 5 and anode 6, ultraviolet rays are generated by the discharge between the both electrodes, and they excite phosphors 12R, 12G, and 12B attached to a spacer 7 to make the selected discharge cells 8 emit lights. The lights are focused by the focus lenses 10 at each discharge cell unit, injected to the front side substrate 2, and emitted outward. Consequently, the diffusion is scarcely generated inside the substrate 2, and a high display brightness is obtained. Furthermore, a color mixing between the neighboring discharge cell units can be prevented and a clear luminous color can be obtained.
