Next, as shown in FIG. 10(b), so-called bag jacquard knitting is performed, in which bag knitting is performed while performing jacquard knitting to form a checkered pattern as shown in FIG. 6(d) described above. The required number of stitches are added on each return trip, and both ends are knitted into a smooth arc. The ratio of the widening stitches may be set according to the roundness of the part to be knitted. After completing the required number of bag jacquard knitting operations, bag jacquard knitting is then carried out over the entire circumference using base yarn and rubber thread as shown in FIG. 9(c) to form an elastic ring portion 9c.

When the knitting of the elastic ring part 9c is completed, the entire periphery of the elastic ring part 9c is knitted several courses using a heat-shrinkable synthetic fiber yarn d (for example, Mobilon) to form a reinforced edge. Form 9d. When knitting is completed, the process moves to a molding step, where the reinforcing edge 9d is heat-treated with steam to shrink the heat-shrinkable yarn d. For this heat treatment, a conventionally known method may be adopted, such as immersing the reinforcing edge portion 9d in hot water at a predetermined temperature, or blowing hot air onto the reinforcing edge portion 9d.

This causes the thread d to contract and form a small loop, reinforcing the periphery of the elastic ring 9C, which has elasticity that is slightly smaller than that of rubber thread but stronger than that of rubber thread, and has an elasticity that is stronger than that of rubber thread. This serves to prevent fraying of the knitted part of the part.
