Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a methanol-based fuel which burns with visualized flame, by dissolving in methanol an organometallic compd. which is soluble in methanol and exhibits flame reaction. CONSTITUTION:A fuel compsn. comprising a methanol-based fuel and, mixed therewith, an organometallic compd. which is soluble in methanol and exhibits flame reaction. Representative examples of the organometallic compd. include an org. acid salt of lithium (e.g., lithium acetate; red-color flame reaction) and an org. acid salt of sodium (yellow-color flame reaction). Of these compds., it is pref. to employ metal compds. which exhibit flame reaction emitting a flame not transparent but likely to be visualized. When an organometallic compd., e.g., lithium acetate, is contained, even if the amt. is not more than about 50ppm and even under the blue sky, flame color can be observed with the naked eye. Moreover, since it is sufficient to incorporate only a small amt. of lithium acetate, the incorporation of the compd. does not adversely affect the properties of the methanol as a fuel. In addition, flame reaction continues until the methanol burns up.

Methanol is considered important because it is a clean fuel in terms of its use as an alternative to petroleum fuel and in terms of exhaust pollution, and the development of methanol engines is currently being hurried.
Methanol causes fuel leakage, ignites, and then burns with a blue flame, so the flame is invisible during the day or in a room with lights on, which poses a safety problem. Ta.

As a means to solve these problems, it has been proposed to visualize the flame of methanol fuel by mixing a petroleum hydrocarbon fraction with methanol fuel (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 59-207987). In this method, it is necessary to mix several petroleum fractions with methanol, which tends to reduce the value of methanol as a fuel.

The inventors of the present invention conducted various studies on the safety of methanol fuel, and discovered an accident in which leaked fuel ignited due to the dissolution of a metal organic compound that is soluble in methanol and causes a flame reaction. The present inventors have discovered that the present invention can be easily discovered even when the method is used.

Organic acid salts of lithium, such as lithium acetate, exhibit a red flame reaction, and organic acid salts of sodium exhibit a yellow flame reaction, but the flame reaction of each metal is known, and the flame is not transparent and easily visualized. Preference is given to using compounds of metals that exhibit a color reaction.

The organic compound of the metal used in the present invention, for example, lithium acetate, is mixed in at only about 50 ppm, and the color of the flame can be seen with the naked eye even on a clear day. Moreover, since it is sufficient to mix in a small amount, it does not affect the properties of methanol as a fuel. It exhibits a flame reaction without any adverse effects and until all the methanol is burned.
