PURPOSE:To prevent the freezing of fresh water sealed within a runner boss by providing a heater in the piston rod of a movable-blade water-turbine. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical type heater 10 is housed within a hollow piston rod 2 in the main spindle 1 of a movable-blade water-turbine. The lower part of the piston rod 2 is located in a runner boss 4 containing sealed fresh water. When the operation of the movable-blade water-turbine is interrupted for a long time in the winter season or cold regions in order to check a runner vane 6, water is normally drained from the outer casing part of the runner boss 4. Therefore, the temperature of the outer part of the runner boss 4 easily drops to 0 deg.C or below. When the heater 10 in the piston rod 2 is electrically energized, however, fresh water in the runner boss 4 is free from freezing. Consequently, the fracture of the water-turbiue or the inoperability thereof due to the freezing of the runner boss 4 and the like can be prevented beforehand.
