Other quinones are useful in the production of aroma components for perfumes and as intermediates in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The products obtained according to the invention have hitherto been produced by various methods that can be generally classified as chemical or electrochemical. Oxidation of aromatic compounds is also described in U.S. Pat.
98.438 and U.S. Pat. No. 4,354.904, by direct electrochemical oxidation of aromatic compounds in the presence of dilute electrolytic solutions and by electrochemical oxidation of oxidizing agents. This has been accomplished by indirect electrochemical oxidation, which is generated and then used to oxidize aromatics.

However, each of these metal ionic oxidants has certain properties that render the oxidation process ineffective. For example, chromium ion exhibits low reactivity and poor selectivity toward the desired product when used as the sole oxidizing agent, and salts of cerium O and manganese. The higher oxidation states of silver, cobalt and lead ions are not very stable and, in the case of iron, are believed to have low reactivity as oxidants or with respect to the regeneration of oxidant species, and in the case of iron, very Not reactive, and in the case of iron, not very reactive.

Although it has the potential to provide a very good electronic oxidizer, it has not been used widely or on an industrial scale so far. This is because it has been associated with poor reactivity and selectivity. Cerium salts are prohibitively expensive and therefore
It must be stable, react cleanly with organic substrates, and be easily regenerated to its higher valence state. For an effective industrial process, it is desirable to produce products in high yields based on the substrate and oxidizing agent. This has been difficult to achieve with certain products, such as 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquine. West German patent 29

Any known cerium salt can be used to distill the cerium (IV) oxide species. Cerium (IV) species are generated by anodic electrochemical oxidation in a manner well known in the art. Cerium salts include nitrates, perchlorates, halides such as chlorides, fluorides, sulfates, acetates, boron fluoride, silicon fluoride, methanesulfonates, trifluoromethanesulfonates, etc. do. Preferred cerium salts are sulfates, acetates, nitrates, methanesulfonates and trifluoromethanesulfonates. This is because the anions of these salts have low reactivity with organic substrates. These cerium salts contain at least about 0.1 mole, preferably about 0.1 mole.
Concentrations from 5 to about 1.5 molar can be utilized. Usually they have been utilized at low concentrations to increase the retention of the salt in solution, or they have been utilized in cerium (I)

It has been discovered that the cerium salt of methanesulfonic acid can remain in solution in this process to provide an effective cerium salt oxidizing agent. This is done by forming a solution containing free methanesulfonic acid at a concentration of at least 1.5N, preferably at least 2N, with respect to the cerium (III) ion concentration present at any point in the system. can be achieved. Alternatively, high selectivity can be maintained at low concentrations of free acid by utilizing an aqueous-organic miscible cosolvent system.

Although chromium itself has been used as an oxidizing agent due to its polyvalent state, it is known to be a very ineffective oxidizing agent and the enhanced results now achieved in the system of the present invention No additional effects can be attributed to the cerium (IV) and chromium cations present. It has been unexpectedly discovered that the presence of catalytic amounts of chromium cations in the cerium (IV) oxidizer system increases the yield/selectivity of the quinone product. When used as an alkyl-substituted fused ring system organic substrate, the yield of the preferred quinone obtained under the conditions of the encapsulation process is usually increased when produced according to the present invention. For example, 2-methylnaphthalene can be produced in substantially higher yields when using the method of the present invention than can be achieved when using the same cerium salt alone.
-Produces methylnaphthoquinone. Alkyl-substituted aromatics give higher yields of related quinone derivatives than aldehyde or ketone derivatives.

The chromium cations should be present in the system in a catalytic amount with respect to the cerium ions present in the system. The molar ratio of chromium to cerium is approximately 1:600 to 1:
20, preferably in the range of 1:150 to 1:30. The presence of large amounts of chromium in the system should be avoided as the yield of quinone product is dramatically reduced under such conditions.

The bath can be undivided or divided by porous partition walls or membranes between the electrodes. The electrode can be of any suitable form, such as a plate, a grid, an expanded metal, or a reticulated porous material, and the anode is any known material suitable for carrying out the oxidation of metal ions. and is preferably lead, lead oxide, platinum, platinized titanium, platinized niobium or a metal oxide-titanium complex. The cathode of the bath can be any known metal suitable for carrying out reduction in an aqueous acid solution in the presence or absence of metal ions such as steel, copper and nickel. One unexpected property of the use of the cerium salt solution described herein is the ability to easily and efficiently generate cerium (IV) oxidizer from cerium (III) ions at high current densities. Another unexpected property is the solution's ability to produce a clean cathodic reduction without producing by-products that interfere with the process and require removal. Electrolysis is about 2 to 20

Electrolysis can be carried out at a temperature of about -20 to 150°C, preferably 0 to 100°C. Most preferably, the vessel temperature and reaction temperature (when the vessel and chemical reactor are separate) are substantially the same.

Contacting the oxidizing agent and the organic compound can be carried out directly in the electrolytic cell. However, it is preferred to transfer the solution containing the oxidizing agent of the invention to a separate reactor, where it is brought into contact with the organic compound to be oxidized under stirring. The organic compound can be introduced into the reactor dissolved or dispersed in the aqueous phase, or can be dissolved together with the aqueous solution in a cosolvent.

This solution is returned to the electrolytic cell for regeneration of the cerium (IV) ion oxidizer. It has been discovered that the cerium(IV)/cerium(III) salt used herein can be easily regenerated over a number of cycles without producing by-products that have an adverse effect on the efficiency of the process.
