い装置が大型化した結果、双ロールの所謂キッシングポ
イント付近で凝固完了した高温の薄肉鋳片が双ロールか
ら長く懸垂する結果となり、キッシングポイント付近の
抗張力の低い鋳片の全体あるいは凝固殻に過大な力が掛
かり、双ロール直下での鋳片の破断や鋳片の横割れ、耳
割れ、中伸び等の欠陥が発生しやすいということがあげ
られる。特に、直径の大きいロールを用いた場合にこの
傾向が強い、このような問題を防ぐ方法として従来、双
ロールの直下に、双ロールとロール周速を合わせるよう
にしたピンチロールを設置して鋳片を支えることが試み
られるが、正確に周速を合わせることが極めて難しい為
に、むしろ、鋳片の欠陥が増加することが多く、殆ど実
用化されていない。

となって双ロール2をはなれ、ループを描きながらピン
チロール6に向かう、双ロール2の直下には本発明にな
るブレーキ付きサポートロール7が設置されており(図
では1対の例を示す)、凝固直後の高温の為に破断した
り、変形したりし易い鋳片5を把持し、双ロール2に懸
垂している鋳片5の自重の一部を支えて、双ロール直下
での鋳片5の破断や横割れ、耳割れ、中伸び等の欠陥の
発生を防止する。
