Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a picture at a high speed by dividing the surface of an object to obtain the luminance of a small number of key points of those divided areas and interpolating the luminance of the part projected on a screen with the luminance of said key points. CONSTITUTION:An object surface dividing part 2 divides the surface of an object into plural areas based on the data given from a picture producing data memory part 1. In this case, the object surface is divided so that the secondary minute coefficient of the luminance can be neglected within a surface area. In case of a triangular surface area, a surface luminance generating part 3 calculates the luminance of three apexes of the surface area based on the picture producing data given from the part 1. An intra-surface area interpolating part 4 obtains the luminance in the surface area needed for production of a picture through linear interpolation done by the luminance of three apexes of the surface area and stores this obtained luminance in a picture memory 5. Thus it is possible to reduce the luminance calculating frequency requiring the large processing time and to produce pictures at a high speed.

2. Description of the Related Art In recent years, image generation devices have been used in a wide variety of fields, including CAD/CAM, display of computer simulation results, and production of movies and commercial films. However, the processing speed is not fast enough, so even faster speeds are expected to make it more comfortable for humans to use.

An example of a conventional image generation device will be described below with reference to the drawings. FIG. 2 shows an example of the configuration of a conventional image generation device. In FIG. 2, the brightness generation section calculates the brightness of all pixels on the screen based on the data in the image generation data storage section. The results are stored in image memory.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention However, in the above configuration, calculations for generating brightness are required as many as the number of pixels. The luminance generation calculation requires considerably more time than other calculations. In the conventional configuration, the large number of brightness generation calculations was the main cause of slowing down the overall processing speed. This slow processing speed is the biggest problem.

The brightness of the surface of the object displayed by the action image generation device is 2
The next differential coefficient is often so small that it can be ignored. Using this fact, when calculating the brightness within the divided surface area, the brightness of some representative points is calculated from the image generation data, but the brightness of other points is determined by interpolating the brightness of the representative points. Find it by By doing so, it is possible to reduce the number of brightness generation calculations that take a long processing time and to speed up image generation.

Embodiment An image generating apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 shows the configuration of the present invention. The function of each part in the embodiment will be explained using FIG. The object surface dividing section 2 divides the surface of the object into several regions. However, the surface area is divided into areas where the second-order differential coefficient of brightness can be ignored. In this example, the surface area is triangular. The surface brightness generation unit 3 calculates the brightness of three vertices of each surface area using image generation data. The intra-surface area interpolation unit 4 calculates the brightness within the surface area and the brightness of the three vertices necessary to create an image by linear interpolation.

In the above embodiment, the operation will be described in the case where the image generation data storage section 1 contains square pyramid data. The object surface dividing section 2 divides the surface of the quadrangular pyramid into six surface regions. That is, each triangular face becomes one surface area, and each square face becomes two surface areas. In the surface brightness generation unit 3, the three
Find the brightness of the vertex. The intra-surface area interpolation unit 4 calculates the internal brightness of only the surface area displayed in the image by interpolating the brightness of three vertices. That is, the brightness is not calculated for the surface that is not displayed on the screen (the back surface).
