Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a wear resistant brass alloy having superior mechanical properties as compared with a conventional high strength brass alloy and well fit for use under severe conditions by adding specified amounts of Al, Mn, Si, Mo and Zn to Cu. CONSTITUTION:The composition of a copper alloy is composed of, by weight, 55-70% Cu, 0.5-6% Al, 1-6% Mn, 0.05-2% Si, 0.01-1% Mo and the balance Zn. The composition may further contain 0.1-3% Pb.

Conventionally, as a wear-resistant copper alloy used under high speed and high load, Mn5Si=precipitate-based brass, which is made by adding Si to high-strength brass, is known. However, under high and severe sliding conditions, wear resistance and other properties are not sufficient from a practical standpoint, and even higher performance is desired.

A's are β phase forming facilitating elements and improve the W1 mechanical properties of the alloy, but if the amount added exceeds 6.0% by weight, they tend to coarsen the casting structure and also generate oxidized slag. easily, and the toughness decreases. On the other hand, if the amount added is less than 0.5% by weight, no toughening effect will be observed.

Like A, Mn improves the mechanical strength of the alloy and also improves the wear resistance. Even if the amount of Mn5Si3 intermetallic compound exceeds the amount by weight, no effect is observed. On the other hand, if the amount added is less than 1.0% by weight, precipitation of the above-mentioned intermetallic compound will be extremely reduced.

Si is an essential element for precipitating Mn and the above-mentioned intermetallic compound, and the amount of Si added is determined based on the ratio with Mn. However, if the amount added exceeds 2.0% by weight, the alloy will become brittle, while if it is less than 0.05% by weight, the precipitation of the intermetallic compound will be extremely reduced.

A 3i-based gold metal compound is precipitated, which has a significant effect on wear resistance. If it is 1.0% or more, the precipitates become coarse and segregation occurs, and if it is 0.01% or less, the above effect is not observed.

The purpose of Pb is to improve machinability, especially machinability, while maintaining the excellent wear resistance of the copper alloy.
If the amount added is 3% or more, component segregation becomes severe and a decrease in strength is observed, while if the amount added is 0.1% or less, no effect of improving machinability is observed.
