When the pulse width is shorter than a predetermined length, a voltage is applied to the lens actuator to drive the objective lens in the opposite direction to the moving direction, and when the pulse width is about a predetermined length, the driving voltage is turned off. By controlling the objective lens at a constant speed, the beam spot can be positioned on the target track with high precision using extremely simple control, and jump mistakes can be prevented as much as possible, resulting in a reduction in access time.

A common method was to count the number of pulses of the tracking signal and control acceleration/deceleration while detecting the amount of movement to bring the beam spot to the target track.

Since the optimum acceleration and deceleration times always vary depending on conditions such as the position and speed of the lens movable part, which is supported by a spring, at the start of track jump, the lens often deviates significantly from the target track after jumping. Therefore, the operation of confirming the position of the beam spot again and jumping to the target track is repeated, which increases the access time accordingly. Furthermore, if accurate acceleration/deceleration control is to be performed taking into consideration the various conditions mentioned above, the control will be complicated.

The pulse width of the tracking signal is measured, and when the pulse width is longer than a certain level, the objective lens is accelerated, when it is shorter, it is decelerated, and when the pulse width is about the same level, the driving voltage of the lens actuator is controlled so that the speed is constant.
