Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a product having the surface with good touch, showing appearance of steadiness, by heat-treating a molded article of expanded polystyrene to form granular faces on the surface. CONSTITUTION:A molded article expanded polystyrene is heat-treated at 150-220 deg.C and the surfaces are made into granular faces to give a product. For example, the heat treatment is carried out by bringing hot air into contact with the molded article while transferring it to a tunnel type heater by a belt conveyor. A honeycomb pattern caused by expansion of individual pellet of particular expanded polystyrene disappears, is not striking and shows uniform and heavy and profound appearance.

Conventionally, expanded polystyrene products have often been used for containers, etc., but pellets containing a foaming agent are used to manufacture slightly larger containers, etc. Expanded polystyrene products using these pellets as a starting material have an expanded surface of the pellets. This creates dense and dense areas that look like a honeycomb pattern, and has properties such as insulation, etc.
Although it is functionally sufficient, it has a poor feel and looks inferior.
Improvement was long awaited.

After adjusting the temperature inside the tunnel hot air stove 2 to 180°C,
At a conveyor speed of m/min, a block-shaped foamed polystyrene molded body 4 surrounded by a smooth surface formed by a conventional method using a mold was fed into the tunnel-shaped heating device 1. 1
After 0 seconds to 3 minutes, the molded product 4 was turned into a foamed polystyrene product 5 from the tunnel hot air oven 2 and sent out from the other end of the hot air oven.

As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, this block-shaped expanded polystyrene product 5 has a uniform surface and a dense grain surface 6, and has a honeycomb structure due to the expansion of individual pellets peculiar to expanded polystyrene. The pattern disappeared and was not noticeable, giving a homogeneous and solid appearance.

As the surface becomes a grain surface 6, the feel in the hand becomes noticeably better, and the luster that was seen in the molded product 4 before heat treatment is less noticeable and subdued in the product 5 due to the grain surface 6. It gave the impression of a superior luxury product.

The reason why the temperature was limited to 150 to 220°C in the furnace was as follows.
This is because at a temperature of 150° C. or lower, the heat treatment takes a long time and the surface of the molded product is difficult to form a uniform grain surface. Also 2
This is because at temperatures exceeding 20°C, the surface of the compact melts and it is difficult to form a uniform grain surface.
