In a spindle device comprising a spindle pivotally supported by a hydrostatic gas bearing, and a drive motor connected to the spindle to rotationally drive the spindle and electrically brake the spindle, there is provided an emergency brake which is braked by a fluid. When the fluid supply source that supplies fluid to the emergency brake and the power supply to the drive motor are cut off, the fluid supply source is connected to the emergency brake and the emergency brake is activated, thereby causing the spindle to move.
