To explain the method for manufacturing the engraving material of the present invention, first, an aqueous coating material for forming a colored layer is prepared. The pigment used in this coating material may be any conventionally known pigment, but particularly preferred pigments are inorganic pigments. Colloidal silica is colloid-sized silica dispersed in an aqueous medium, and is available on the market under trade names such as Snowtex (Nissan Chemical), Cataloid (Fluid Chemicals), Rudtsux (DuPont), and Nalcoog (Nalco). For the purpose of this invention, the concentration is 20
% or more is preferable. Inorganic fillers are amorphous silica, quartz, cristobalite, fused silica, alumina powder, fused alumina, sillimanite, mullite, zirconia, titanium, magnesia, and various natural clay materials, and these materials can be fine powders. is necessary.

The coating material used in this invention is prepared by mixing the above components and uniformly dispersing them. 2 to 30% by weight, the inorganic filler is about 40 to 80% by weight of solids, and the total solids content is about 70 to 90% by weight. By using each component within such ranges, a colored layer with good cuttability with a chisel can be formed. In addition to the above-mentioned components, a water-soluble organic resin or resin emulsion can be used as an auxiliary binder. The engraving material of the present invention having a plurality of engraving layers can be obtained by preparing coating materials of various hues as described above, applying them to the surface of the substrate, drying them, and repeating this process.

In the material of the present invention with the above structure, the base and the engraving layer are completely integrated, and the engraving layer can be easily cut with a chisel, and the engraved part depends on the engraving area and depth of the engraving. Surfaces with various different hues appear, making it possible to form a sculptural surface with excellent three-dimensionality and color. The engraved surface of the engraved material of the present invention has excellent water resistance and weather resistance, so it will not lose its shape or change color even if exposed outdoors for a long time. The surface is generally matte, but it can be made glossy by applying lacquer to the surface after engraving.
